 Ravens and Crows

Can you tell the difference between a raven and a crow?  Both are very similar, but have subtle differences.  Both are highly intelligent birds, and are black.  Both get a bad reputation as an ominous bird.  They are favorites to witches and the Gothic community. You often see them represented in Gothic and dark art.

You can tell the difference by their call, tail feathers, size and behavior.

-Ravens often travel in pairs, while crows travel in groups.

-Crows give a cawing high pitch nasal sound, (caw, caw).  The raven's call is a lower croaking hoarse sound (gronk, gronk).

-A crow's tail feathers are shaped like a fan, while the raven's tail has a V wedge shaped tail.

-Crows are smaller than ravens, a crow is about the size of a pigeon or 17 inches long and a ravens is the size of a hawk about 24 inches long. Crows weigh  0.7 to 1.4 lbs while Ravens can weight up to 1.5 to 4.4 lbs.

-Crows like populated urban areas, are more social and can recognize and remember people by thier faces.  Ravens are drawn to wilder areas, where cattle and sheep are, they're less social and more cautious.

-A crow can live up to 8 years while the raven can live up to 30 years!
Those are some of the ways you can tell the difference between ravens and crows.

We love ravens and crows and have a few jewelry pieces with either crows or ravens
